Many people tell us that they have better mental clarity when they cleanse regularly and that it also helped them to kick unhealthy eating habits. To us cleansing is a tool, a ritual, a reset button, a way to start and stick to a healthier lifestyle so that we can have the body, skin and life that we want.
Prepare your body for the cleanse by starting to eliminate all unhealthy foods 1-3 days before. We recommend eating a gentle vegetarian diet limiting salty and fried foods, processed sugars and starches, gluten, alcohol, caffeine, dairy products and any other processed foods with preservatives, colourings, flavourings and stabilisers.
If this isn’t something you’re used to, just do the best you can and focus on eliminating the big things that make the most difference, like red meats, processed and fatty foods, alcohol and caffeine. You could even try to do this for 1 or 2 meals of the day instead of all 3 if that feels more comfortable for you.
Try to eat more green vegetables, raw food where possible, fresh fruit, nuts, whole grains and herbal teas.
There’s a lot of extra space made when you have all your meals and snacks prepared for you and we like to use this extra time to contemplate, rest and pamper ourselves (if that’s possible with your schedule). There are some things that will enhance the cleanse, and we think it’s a great excuse to put yourself first. You could go to the spa and take a nourishing salt bath, perspiration through light exercise will remove more toxins, and a full body massage or foot reflexology will release any tension you’re holding.
Be kind to yourself during your cleanse, some people report having more energy and sharp mental clarity, others say they have less. We believe it’s a state of mind. If you feel sure that this cleanse will help and nourish your body you are much more likely to have a good experience.
If you do need to eat something try to reach for these first:
• Other liquids like herbal teas, light soups or vegetable broth
• Whole foods like nuts and seeds, or celery sticks and cucumber slices,
the act of chewing can stave off hunger
• Drink lots of water, ideally a tall glass between each juice
Once the cleanse is over, it’s a great time to reflect on your diet and eating habits as a whole. How does your food affect you? Does the food you eat really satisfy you? How would you prefer to eat? Only you have the answers and know what’s best. What we’ve found works for us is to eat a plant-based diet most of the time, foods your grandmother would recognise and always in moderation.
After a cleanse, particularly the longer ones, we reintroduce solid foods slowly so that we don’t shock our system. We recommend eating:
• Light starches like brown rice, sweet potatoes and squashes
• Lightly steamed vegetables and vegetable broth
• Reintroduce lean meat and fish in small quantities
• Plenty of water as usual
